Modern Cultural Curators: Simon Costin

Wonderful, magical and fantastical are terms that best describes the aesthetic of set designer Simon Costin. #FilmFestFridays takes a closer look.

Story telling is at the heart of what set designer Simon Costin does, or what he describes as: “I help to create a three-dimensional environment where something takes place, be it a fashion show or a photo shoot.”

Costin’s trademark aesthetic sees him conjuring up spaces that are often described as wonderful, magical and fantastical. And he’s worked with the likes of Tim Walker, Alexander McQueen and Paolo Roversi.

In his east London home Costin has many of the props, artefacts, objects and “stuff” that have featured in his work over the years. There’s an oversized Humpty Dumpty, a glowing Love lightbulb and an 18th century Italian state coffin, among other things.
