Naoto Fukasawa

Japanese industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa is one of the world's most influential designers.

Naoto Fukasawa believes that designing shape is to give form to values that people tacitly share and desire. Fukasawa visually captures these values, drawing their exact outline in his designs. His ability for visualising such unseen outlines for things is not easily described; nonetheless, people are convinced by his ability when they experience his design.

Fukasawa’s ability to elicit the essential value of things through design travels beyond borders or disciplines and his thinking is respected internationally. His widely known design philosophy “Without Thought” finds hints in the subconscious behaviour of people to inform design that is unobtrusive and familiar, and he runs “Without Thought” workshops to share this concept.

Fukasawa collaborates with leading companies and brands in countries such as Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, and in Scandinavia and Asia, in addition to acting as a consultant to Japanese companies. His area of work is broad and he works with various fields in design that defy categorisation. His consulting work is mainly focussed on evaluating corporate strategies in line with the status quo and definitions of quality of life in order to steer companies in the direction that society is inevitably heading. This extends as far as designing products that mark the company’s social responsibilities and visualising their corporate strategies. Fukasawa‘s consulting has led many companies to great success, while winning numerous awards for his efforts.
