Aperture is an experimental concept by Special Projects Studio designed to transform smartphone interaction by limiting screen access and promoting mindful use. The concept revolves around a flipped phone case design, creating a small “window” into the phone’s interface. This intentional restriction helps reduce distractions and encourages more deliberate engagement with technology.
The interface dynamically adapts to the smaller window, distilling apps into their most essential functions—similar to smartwatch experiences. Users receive only the core features they need, complemented by AI-powered voice commands that generate a focused, task-based UI. Whether navigating a city or setting up a distraction-free workspace, Aperture ensures a streamlined digital experience.
Beyond personal use, Aperture enhances digital well-being in social settings. Flipping the case can trigger shared interactions among users, reinforcing presence and connection. Additionally, when encountering cluttered websites or distracting content, flipping the case automatically activates a simplified “reader mode” or AI-generated summary, keeping users focused on what matters most.
Currently in development, Aperture challenges conventional smartphone design by proving that innovation isn’t about adding more but reimagining what already exists. Interested users can join the conversation at focuswithaperture.com.
