At first glance one might think that Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka’s Sparkle collection is an elegant range of crystal glassware to be used at social gatherings or special occasions. The collection, however, is in fact a series of contemporary furniture.
The Sparkle collection is a continuation of Yoshioka’s exploration of prisms and faceted surfaces and how this might be implemented into the fields of product or industrial design. The “sparkling” stools and side tables are made from polycarbonate, which appears to have the texture and cut of crystal glass. The ridges of each piece gently curves around the sides and fan out across the tops, ultimately giving the furniture a twisted appearance.
The Sparkle collection, now in a range of eye-catching colours, was designed for Italian brand Kartell and will be on display at Milano Salone del Mobile 2014.
