Bhangra

Bhangra is a musical genre that grew out of the diasporic Indian community in Britain and was popularised through dancehalls. Similar to other displaced musical movements such as house in Chicago, techno in Detroit, northern soul in Wigan and even kwaito in Johannesburg, it flourished beneath the radar of mainstream media for years. Now, the world’s first book attempting to offer a history and sociological engagement with bhangra has been released. Besides the measured historical narrative, the book offers an engaging visual chronology of style and culture. Three loose floorboards form a fitting cover.
