Switzerland has unveiled its next-generation passport, a blend of innovative visual design and advanced security. Geneva-based studio RETINAA, in collaboration with Thales and Orell Füssli, was commissioned to reimagine this iconic document.
The passport’s visual design reflects Switzerland’s cartographic heritage, celebrating its natural and cultural landscape. Each page takes holders on a journey along the nation’s waterways, while under ultraviolet light, hidden contour lines and architectural landmarks are revealed to showcase Switzerland’s topography and cultural icons.
Water is a central theme, reflecting Switzerland’s reputation as the "water tower of Europe." Home to 1,500 lakes and numerous rivers and glaciers, the country supplies 6% of Europe’s drinking water reserves. The passport’s design symbolizes water as a force of connection, exchange, and national identity.
Beyond aesthetics, the passport integrates cutting-edge security features, including advanced printing techniques, microtext, and UV-reactive inks, making forgery nearly impossible.
RETINAA’s innovative approach ensures that the Swiss passport is more than just a travel document—it is a reflection of national identity, technological expertise, and Swiss precision, seamlessly blending art with security.
