Using tyres as chairs seems like something you would do in the heart of the bush, around a fire while eating a stew made in a cast iron pot – what South Africans call potjiekos. Sean Smith and Delarey Wagner had a very different idea.
Tyred Sustainable Lifestyle Furniture was started less than a year ago when Smith found a pile of tyres and wondered what could be done with them. Planning to use them as they were, this duo worked tirelessly to transform used and old tyres into custom designed chairs, ottomans and tables that can be used both indoors and outdoors.
The recent Design Indaba Expo brought much success to this simple furniture brand, which had them spinning out of control at times. The buyers and public couldn’t get enough of the colourfully decorated and branded tyre furniture. In fact, not only did they recently deliver 10 chairs to African Touch in Denmark, but renowned trend forecaster and Design Indaba speaker Li Edelkoort also picked up a few for herself to go back to New York.
“Tyred Furniture has had great success from the Design Indaba Expo. From You magazine voting us as one of their ‘Top 10 Greatest Things at the Design Indaba’, to the many contacts we made, Tyred is grateful and will honestly go forth as a brand with integrity.”
