Sweet art by girls

Spookasem, opening at Salon91 Contemporary Art Collection on 20 January 2010, features a remarkable group of all-female SA creatives.

“Sugar and spice and all things nice; a whiff of the whimsical; a sense of play, of childhood innocence; of indulgence but also of excess; of sweetness poisoned by gluttony and guilt; of the carnivalesque; of nostalgia, dreams and nightmares; of desire and sinful pleasures; an essence of the ethereal, conjuring up with it mysterious images of fairgrounds, forgotten lands, extinct creatures, imagined monsters, skulls, and friendly ghosts…” reads the press-release of Spookasem, opening at Salon91 Contemporary Art Collection on 20 January. This enchanting, salon-style exhibition will feature a remarkable group of all-female South African creatives, based both locally and abroad. The exhibition includes a rich collection of painting, sculpture, print and drawing, playfully centered round the quirky theme of “spookasem” (Afrikaans for “candy floss”). Until 20 February 2010.
