Contrast City is a sustainable development initiative in Marrakesh, Morocco, aimed at finding a viable, productive use for tyre rubber waste.
Initiated by a French fair trade importer, the project is managed by Sandrine Dole, a designer specialising in handcraft. She manages the entire process, from organising the supply of the recycled raw materials to standardising production.
The production process came to involve local natural raw materials like wool that worked to create a strong visual and tactile contrast with the rubber.
The result has been a range of interesting products like waste paper baskets and scatter cushions that is set to be sold in fair trade shops in France. There are also plans to extend the range to include furniture designs.
