Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has revealed plans to transform the historic Milan Vapa Paper Mill in Belgrade, Serbia, into a cultural destination honouring Nikola Tesla’s ground-breaking contributions to science and technology. Collaborating with Serbia’s Bureau Cube Partners, the project reimagines the 1924-built factory—a regional cultural monument—as a 13,400-square-meter hub of innovation and education, while preserving its industrial heritage as one of the region’s first modern factories.
The museum’s design, inspired by Tesla’s research into electromagnetic fields and wireless energy, features dynamic elliptical forms radiating from the factory’s original chimney, which will serve as the centrepiece of the transformation. Highlights include galleries showcasing Tesla’s work, interactive exhibits, and a Tesla Electronic Transformer Gallery housing a 12-million-volt transformer. Additional amenities include a rooftop restaurant overlooking the Sava River, a café, and a multipurpose hall. Outside, Nikola Tesla Square will offer gardens, plazas, and pathways inspired by Tesla’s scientific achievements.
Sustainability is integral to the project, incorporating passive design, renewable energy, and geothermal systems. Zaha Hadid’s vision preserves the site’s historic architecture while creating an cultural destination celebrating Nikola Tesla’s legacy and fostering innovation.
