Perhaps the curator is no longer in museums, galleries or cultural institutions, but in front of a screen. The Museum of African Design (MOAD) and the 12 Decades Art Hotel in Johannesburg’s Maboneng precinct is inviting aspiring curators, creatives and novices alike to put together an exhibition from behind their screens.
The works that are available to select from are all part of the 12 Decades’ Life Collection. The 95 piece collection includes artwork by local artists Haroon Gunn-Salie, James Webb, Buntu Fihla and international artists, such as Indian-born Mithu Sen and French artist Gilles Furtwängler. The hotel has acquired this diverse collection of artworks for its permanent collection through a series of artists’ exchange programmes.
The Curate Life Collection competition by 12 Decades Art Hotel and MOAD proposes that if you are part of a culture, then you are qualified to contribute to the arrangement of its artefacts.
The winner will have the museum’s entire project space to install their exhibition and the winner and two runners up will receive internships at the SABC Art Collection. The panel of judges consists of MOAD director Aaron Kohn, artist Marcus Neustetter (also one of the Life Collection custodians) and independent curator for the SABC Art collection Koulla Xinisteris.
The Curate Life Collection competition runs until Friday, 3 July 2015. The winning exhibition concept will come to life and be exhibited at MOAD during Art Week and the FNB Art Fair in September 2015.
